Coach John Jones- 1979-2018

A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Coach John Jones came to Spring Valley in 1979 where he took over a youthful cross country and track program.  

 

During his 38 years leading the Vikings cross country program he acquired a 418-49 record including 18 Region Championships, 1 South Carolina State Runner-up, and 1 South Carolina State Championship.  During his tenure they finished in the top 5 in the state 16 times and had 4 individual State Champions.

 

Coach Jones kept up his winning tradition on the track leading the Viking Track and Field program to an overall record of 309-56.  He was a part of 20 Region Championships, 8 South Carolina State Runner-up trophies, and 5 South Carolina State Track and Field Championships.  While leading the Viking track program he helped coach 195 All-Staters and 78 individual state Champions.

 

Individually, Coach Jones received many personal awards of his own such as being named South Carolina Coach of the Year 7 times and being a 2-time National Track Coach of the Year.   In 2005 he was inducted into the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame and later in 2007 inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
